Home Warranty – Is it for You?

July 9, 2011

We all get insurance – or at least we should – health insurance, car insurance, life insurance, and almost always, some sort of property insurance.  But do you know what your property insurance covers?  When was the last time you read the terms of your policy?  In order to be sure you have the coverage you think you have, it is a good idea to review your coverage annually.

Most folks find that their homeowners or renters insurance does not cover some critical elements in their home.  For example, what happens if the sewer or septic backs up?  What if the garbage disposal breaks or the garage door opener suddenly stops working?  What is covered in the case of an electrical or plumbing failure?  In many instances, a home warranty can bridge the gap in your insurance coverage.

While a home warranty policy can cost between $300 and $500 annually, it can save you money in the long run, if a system fails in your home.  These are links to two specific home warranty companies – both of which I have used.

First American Home Warranty: https://homewarranty.firstam.com/Default.aspx

American Home Shield: http://www.ahs.com/

Review the coverage well and be aware of where your household is exposed.  I almost always recommend that my clients get home warranty protection.  If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
